As an animist I believe all things have spirit, including the silver I work with. I also believe that the art I produce is not really mine, but that I am a mere tool through which the Art finds its outlet.
But of course, it’s not always easy to let go of ego, particularly when I don’t feel I have achieved enough, or am comparing myself with others. When I voiced these feelings of insecurity to a friend recently, he told me that if I truly believe the Art isn’t mine, that I was being somehow ungrateful. That did make me stop and think.
Art is a gift....and, at times, a curse....a hard task master....but a gift for which I will always be forever grateful.
